3Hani ABADI est un auteur-compositeur multi-instrumentiste d’origine jordanienne, qui a vécu en Yougoslavie, et qui est maintenant installé en Californie. Il est l’un des membres du groupe de « dark » métal oriental BILOCATE, fondé en Jordanie en 2001. Mettant de côté son style musical de prédilection, il présentait en 2023 son premier projet acoustique nommé « Tiamat », qui raconte des histoires personnelles plutôt moroses, car à priori, il ne l’a pas eu facile.
Avec sa voix très grave, triste, un brin monotone et sans grande amplitude, il a composé 13 chansons qui font plus dans le folk rock que le rock progressif, mais cela reste un avis personnel. Des textes émouvants soulignent des thématiques déprimantes, allant de la perte de repères, aux peines à la suite du déracinement, au goût d’être ailleurs, à la perte d’un être cher à la suite des effets du cancer, aux difficultés de la Covid, à l’oubli, et à la destruction de la planète. Bon! Ce n’est pas jojo et déconseillé à ceux qui ont déjà le moral au niveau des chaussettes.
Musicalement parlant, bien que cela soit plutôt conventionnel, cela est très bien présenté, avec le support d’une équipe de musiciens internationaux provenant du Portugal, de l’Argentine, du Venezuela, du Japon et de l’Ukraine. Mais l’ambiance tristounette, sur la longueur pèse un peu, et il est dommage qu’il n’y ait que deux chansons où l’ambiance est plus légère. Bon, si vous êtres amateurs d’auteurs compositeurs « folk rock » qui portent des messages avec un bon doigté à la guitare, cela pourrait certainement vous plaire, et il y a quelques moments intéressants où « americana », « country » et de subtils passages orientaux s’entrecroisent. What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I can’t imagine a life without music, but in an alternate universe, I might find myself in Africa, dedicating my time to conserving and studying wildlife.
I remember a neighbor of mine who played an instrument – at that time, owning one was a luxury I couldn’t afford. However, my intense desire to play drove me to approach our neighbor. Recognizing my eagerness, he took me under his wing and taught me a simple three-chord progression. I spent the entire day practicing until my fingertips went numb. That day marked the birth of my first melody, igniting an enduring passion for music within me. Since then, the seed of creation has only grown stronger.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
Outside of playing music, my main focus revolves around my family, as they are my top priority. Concurrently, I am deeply engaged in continuous learning through my studies. I have an inherent drive to remain active and engaged; I find it challenging to stand still without pursuing something meaningful.
My creativity in both music and songwriting is profoundly influenced by my surroundings and experiences. Whether it’s drawing from personal encounters, a captivating book, or the emotions evoked by a movie, everything I’m exposed to leaves an imprint on my creative process. Translating these influences into a concise 3 to 4-minute song remains a rewarding yet demanding process.
How long have you been making music?
I’ve been deeply involved in making music since my teenage years, primarily as part of my band ‘Bilocate,’ where I’ve dedicated over 20 years to playing bass. Recently, I’ve embarked on a new journey with my solo career, aiming to expand my artistic horizons. In this venture, I’m exploring diverse themes, moods, and genres without limiting myself, believing that as musicians, pushing beyond our comfort zones is essential for musical growth.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
I moved to the Bay Area of California a couple of years ago, and the proximity to the ocean has already started to influence the themes in my songwriting. However, my musical roots stretch back thousands of years to the Middle East and Balkans, and these rich cultural characteristics will always remain integral to my music, regardless of my location. The new environment may add new dimensions, but the essence of my music will continue to carry these deep-rooted influences.
Tell me about your most memorable shows, if you haven’t played live what is your vision for a live show?
One of the most memorable moments in my musical journey was performing at the DevilStone Festival in Lithuania. The connection and response from the audience to our music epitomized the very reason we create music—to foster a bond that transcends borders, ethnicity, and backgrounds. The interaction with the crowd showcased the profound power of music as a universal language. I was fortunate to meet incredible people during that show, and to this day, I cherish those connections. It’s a testament to how music serves as a bridge, uniting people from diverse backgrounds in a shared experience.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Among the places I aspire to perform at, European festivals like Wacken and Hellfest stand out due to their significance in the metal scene. As for a single favorite venue, I’m hard-pressed to choose just one at the moment.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Choosing a dream lineup for a show is a tough call. It must include legends like Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Pearl Jam. Honestly, I might be more inclined to watch than perform, feeling awestruck by the presence of these iconic bands. Creating a lineup with such legends would be an unforgettable experience, even if I’m not on stage.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Believe in yourself, practice relentlessly, and never let others define your worth. You’re good enough; with time, you’ll only get better. Trust your instincts and continuously pursue music for the love and passion it brings
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
If I had to pick one, it would be ‘Eulogy.’ This song immortalizes the memory of my late grandmother, whom I lost to cancer. During a lockdown, I was unable to attend her funeral in person, so I had to participate at 3 AM via phone. The song holds a special place in my heart as a tribute to her.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
If referring to my solo career amidst family commitments and studies, I haven’t taken my project on the road. Therefore, that material has yet to be tested with a live audience. It’s a chapter I’m eagerly looking forward to exploring.
What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?
My creative process revolves around drawing inspiration from various sources—be it a phrase, an idea, or even a simple melody. I liken it to building a castle, step by step, piece by piece.
Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music, if so please tell me about them?
I believe in the transformative power of shared experiences. Music has always been my salvation, and I aspire for my music and lyrics to resonate with someone like my idols’ music spoke to me. I want to create that unique, deeply personal experience that profoundly touches individuals.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
I’m currently immersed in creating my next release, with around 13 to 14 pipeline tracks requiring further development. I aim to release some singles next summer, followed by an EP or an album. The direction will depend on how these songs evolve as I explore various ideas and themes for this upcoming project.

Kreativität bedeutet Freiheit, dementsprechend legt sich HANI ABADI auf „Tiamat“ auch kaum auf ein bestimmtes Genre fest.
Zwar ist ein orientalisch angehauchtes Grundgerüst in allen Songs dieses Albums zu erkennen, aber die weiteren Verzweigungen der Musik reichen von Singer/Songwriter-Einflüssen über Indie-Pop-Tendenzen bis hin zu melancholischem Folk(-Rock).
Und doch klingt dieses Album weniger zerstückelt, als es vielleicht im ersten Moment erscheint. Das liegt u.a. an der warmen Stimme von HANI ABADI, die ein entspanntes bzw. bedachtes Gefühl in die Musik einbringt.
Zudem finden sich mit dem heroisch angehauchten „Kiss of Steel“ oder auch „Trapped“ einige Stücke, die vielfältige Qualitäten in sich bergen. Erstere Nummer gefällt mit einem heroischem Anstrich, der beinahe martialische Züge annimmt und das Thema von Stolz und Kampfgeist passend einfängt. Bilder von berittenen Kämpfern und dergleichen ziehen vor dem inneren Auge auf, was auch an der klassischen Marschrhythmik des Songs liegt.
Das folgende „The Wanderer“ verdeutlicht die feinen Kontraste des Albums, wenngleich sich die Stimmung des vorherigen Songs fortsetzt. Der Song klingt nachdenklicher, aber kaum weniger fesselnd, was vor allem an Hanis Gesang liegt.
Im Grunde lässt sich diese Formel aus akustischer Instrumentierung mit reichlich Hang zu klanglicher Tradition plus einer dichterischen Erzählweise in puncto Gesang auf jeden Song dieses Albums übertragen. Dadurch wirkt „Tiamat“ unterm Strich sehr homogen erlaubt dem Hörer sehr tief in die Musik einzutauchen.
Auf jeden Fall lohnt sich diese Entdeckungsreise, denn hier werden klangliche Tradition, Liebe zur Kunst und ein erzählerischer Ansatz zwischen Märchen und Selbstreflektion zu einem interessanten Ganzen vermischt. Einziger Knackpunkt an der Geschichte ist, dass HANI ABADIs Musik ausschließlich digital erhältlich ist, was ein dezidiertes Textstudium und damit einhergehend auch den verträumten Charakter der Musik auf Dauer zunichtemacht.
FAZIT: Der malerisch-mystische Charakter von „Tiamat“ birgt eine ganze Menge Potenzial, um sich in der Musik von HANI ABADI zu verlieren. Die vielen kleinen Etappen des Albums werden von einem nachdenklichen Grundton zusammengehalten, der immer auch einen Raum für die schönen Seiten des Lebens lässt und so am Ende den Blick hin in eine positive Zukunft richtet.

US based artist Hani Abadi is out with the album “Tiamat”, and this is an album I suspect many will file somewhere in the folk music department on initial inspection. If it fits perfectly in that category is a bit of an open question, as this is a boundary crossing excursion, but with clear singer/songwriter sentiments and a constant undercurrent of Americana being a part of the experience here it won’t be all that wrong either. This is very much a calm and collected affair, with the deep and calm lead vocals and a vital acoustic guitar presence being cornerstones of the songs. The rhythm department chimes in nicely, with the drummer in particular serving some charmingly subdued but expressive and creative patterns, and keyboards and piano are tastefully expanding the landscapes explored. The mood and atmosphere is of the darker kind, with borderline haunting qualities, and a defining trait of the album as a whole is the subtle and nuanced inclusion of world music elements that adds a very careful and borderline ethereal exotic quality to many of the songs. A production to seek out if you enjoy folk, world music and acoustic rock with a calm, dark and subtly haunting mood and atmosphere.

The grunge bands from Seattle only enjoyed success for a relatively small stretch of time, yet few musical movements had a more profound impact on mainstream music. This style, and all of the other alt-rock styles closely associated with it, had as many fans as it had detractors. The critics who complained about it, more often than not, focused on the music’s inherent tendency to focus on the more depressing facts related to the human experience.
But who else in pop music dared speak about it? Sure, you get brief glimpses of humanity in songs like “Another Day in Paradise.” But, for the most part, commercial entertainment strives to make the audience forget about hardships. This is because you can only ask for money once you get someone comfortable enough and beaming with a smile to give it to you.
Thankfully, there are those who have other ideas. Hani Abadi’s “Dementia” is a confrontational piece of alt-rock. It puts the listener in close vicinity of a topic of mental illness. It’s not an easy conversation to have, not even when it comes in the guise of a three-minute song. Musically, Abadi’s guttural vocals and the grunge-rock arrangement dominate the track. It’s a musical journey, even if the destination eventually reached will not involve happy endings.

„Tiamat“ ist ein Ausflug in musikalische Tiefe, die anfangs fast schon zu ruhig erscheint. Doch mit jedem neuen Durchlauf (und davon gab es einige) entwickeln sich die Songs, die alle ein klein wenig orientalische Einflüsse mit sich bringen, zu kleinen Perlen, die man einfach nicht mehr aus den Gehörgängen herausbekommen will. Die ruhige und tiefe, sonore Stimme nimmt den Hörer gefangen, zieht ihn förmlich in die Songs hinein. Das Album ist ein Werk, das berührt und zugleich mehr als tiefgründig und auch sehr persönlich ist. Abadi scheut sich nicht vor den harten Themen, wenn er den emotionalen Schmerz über den Verlust von Familienmitgliedern in der Ferne, die Dunkelheit der Krankheit und wie sich unser Leben seit der Pandemie kollektiv verändert hat, verarbeitet. Die Emotionen sind in jedem Track durch einzigartige bewegende Melodien und ungemein kraftvolles Songwriting zu spüren. Der vielseitig begabte Komponist erklärt, dass das Album keine Beschränkungen hat – es ist einfach nur Musik, die den Weg weist. Es dauert ein wenig bis man die emotionale Tiefe des Albums für sich entdeckt hat, sich die Songs in ihrem vollen Glanz zu entfalten verstehen. Auch wenn dies nun alles nach Lobhudelei klingt, so sei dieses Werk, das es leider nur digital gibt, jedem Musikfreund mit offenen Ohren (und offenem Herz) wärmstens empfohlen. Hani Abadi – ein Name, auf den man achten sollte.
Fazit: Tiefgründig, emotional und besonders berührend.

Eine musikalische Ausnahme haben wir jetzt vorliegen. Ausnahme deswegen, weil Hani Abadi, der aus Jugoslawien stammt und seine Heimat in der kalifornischen Bay Area gefunden hat, seine Leidenschaft zur Musik nicht nur einem Genre widmet. Aufgewachsen mit “Master Of Puppets” (Metallica), weiter zu dunklem orientalischen Metal in der Band “Bilocate” entwickelt, möchte Hani als Soloprojekt dem Geist der Musik fröhnen. Was für ihn bedeutet, er möchte sich nicht in ein festes Genre einbinden lassen.
Das beweist auch sein diverser Musikgeschmack, der von Wagner‘s “Walküre” über die britische Rockband “Porcupine Tree” (die noch immer touren) bis hin zum Grunge der 90er Jahre geht.
Um das Album richtig zu verstehen, musste ich es mir zweimal anhören, um die richtigen Worte zu finden. Sicherlich thematisch keine leichte Kost, die uns hier vorgelegt wird. Aber durchaus hörenswert. Schon aus dem Grund, wie Hani uns gesanglich einbindet.
So befasst er sich auch mit nur allzu menschlichen Problemen des Lebens, und deren negativen Auswirkungen. “Dementia” als Opener zeigt die Folgen dieser Krankheit auf. Die Rückbildung vom Erwachsenen zum Kind. Mystisch, der Thematik geschuldet, und einer fast kühlen erdigen Stimmung.
Überhaupt befasst sich das Album mit persönlichen Schicksalsschlägen (ähnlich wie “Ventesorg” von Morten Sobyskogen, 11.5. hier im Hellfire Magazin). Die Verarbeitung dieses persönlichen Traumas setzt Hani perfekt durch die Musik um. In der vorab ausgekoppelten Single “Distance” bleibt der Sound in einem tragenden, melancholischen Rhythmus. Klar, es ist tragisch, aber dieser gleichbleibende Drumschlag hat etwas Bewegendes. Mit einer kaum zu begreifenden Leichtigkeit zu der Thematik, sagt Hani uns: “life will be moving on”.
Rhythmisch und von der Klangfarbe lasst mich ruhig den Vergleich zu Cat Stevens ziehen. Melancholisch, aber nicht kitschig (was ja auch oft vorkommt), nachdenklich aber nicht depressiv, nimmt Hani uns auf seine Reise in die Vergangenheit mit. Die orientalischen Klänge dazu lassen den Verdacht aufkeimen, es gehe zu einem Fest. Hier geht es um Tragödien seines Lebens.
Sein Track “Kiss Of Steel” hat schon fast martialische Rhythmen. Schließ die Augen, und Du siehst Dich auf dem Pferd durch den Wüstensand reiten. Gefolgt von wilden Horden, die durch die schlagenden Drums verkörpert werden.
Hani bringt uns einen zeitlosen Übergang näher, den jeder von uns irgendwann erleben wird. Nicht im üblichen Doom oder Black Metal Stil. Vergänglichkeit auf eine angenehme Art und Weise.
Fazit: Mit einer Selbstverständlichkeit als ob man im Center shoppt, so bringt Hani Schicksal, Persönlichkeit und Lebenserfahrung in die schwarzen Rillen. Soll man ihn bedauern, oder soll man ihn dafür loben?? Ich tendiere zum Letzteren. Hani macht trotz der traurigen Geschichten hinter den Songs, uns allen Mut. Egal welches Schicksal Du erfährst, das Leben geht weiter.
Ein Debutalbum, das 8,5 von 10 Hellfire Punkten für sich einnimmt.

Das Album “Tiamat” wartet mit dreizehn Stücken auf, die sich durch die verschiedensten Musikstile hangeln. Das ist auch der Grund dafür, dass sich das Werk schwer einordnen lässt und kein Genre so richtig abbildet. Mister Abadi (Mitglied der jordanischen Formation Bilocate) selbst ist in mehreren Funktionen auf dem Release vertreten. Bei verschiedenen Stücken singt er und spielt Bass und Klarinette oder auch die Gitarre. Des Weiteren hat er sich verschiedene Musiker (Eduardo Sinatra, Pedro Lage, Quentin Charbit, Max Kerner) zu seinem Projekt dazugeholt, die sicherlich auch zu der umfangreichen Sound-Gebräu (ethnische Instrumente, melancholischer Grunge, balladesker Post-Rock, Ray Wilson-lastiger Singer/Songwriter Pop) beigetragen haben. Zudem stammen die Musiker aus verschiedenen Ländern wie Portugal, Japan und der Ukraine).
Auch dies hat war dem Variantenreichtum der Songs sicherlich förderlich. Als Hörer trifft mich diese Mischung allerdings genauso und ich finde Stücke, die mir zusagen und Songs, die überhaupt nicht zu meinem Hörgefühl passen. Deshalb ist es schwierig, die Scheibe zu bewerten. Produziert und musikalisch gut umgesetzt ist das Konzept in jedem Fall und sicherlich wird durch die Vielschichtigkeit auch fast jeder etwas finden, das zu ihm passt. Mir persönlich ist das allerdings nicht genug, da ich eine Scheibe nur dann kaufe, wenn sie mir größtenteils gefällt. Herr Abadi zeigt auf seinem Album eine musikalische Vielfältigkeit, die nicht unbedingt jedermanns Sache sein dürfte.
